Daphnia as a model organism in limnology and aquatic biology: introductory remarks
Cladocerans of the genus Daphnia are keystone pelagic filter feeders in many temperate ponds and lakes. They have also become popular model organisms in various biological disciplines, from aquatic ecology to biomedical sciences. The crucial features that make these organisms excellent experimental models are their cyclical parthenogenetic life cycle together with easy culturing and handling. T...
متن کاملDaphnia as an Emerging Epigenetic Model Organism
Daphnia offer a variety of benefits for the study of epigenetics. Daphnia's parthenogenetic life cycle allows the study of epigenetic effects in the absence of confounding genetic differences. Sex determination and sexual reproduction are epigenetically determined as are several other well-studied alternate phenotypes that arise in response to environmental stressors. Additionally, there is a l...
متن کاملUsing ‘‘The Organism’’ as a Conceptual Focus in an Introductory Biology Course
Akey role of introductory biology in the college curriculum (similar to other introductory sciences) is to provide students with a foundation of information on which they can build the rest of their major. Too often, however, students (and some faculty) view the introductory course as nothing more than an overview of essential facts and concepts. This ‘‘baseline’’ approach to teaching introduct...
متن کاملEcotoxicogenomic Approaches for Understanding Molecular Mechanisms of Environmental Chemical Toxicity Using Aquatic Invertebrate, Daphnia Model Organism
Due to the rapid advent in genomics technologies and attention to ecological risk assessment, the term "ecotoxicogenomics" has recently emerged to describe integration of omics studies (i.e., transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and epigenomics) into ecotoxicological fields. Ecotoxicogenomics is defined as study of an entire set of genes or proteins expression in ecological organisms to p...
متن کاملIntroductory remarks.
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a difficult disorder to study because there is no convincing evidence for a simple, basal, physiologic lesion associated with it. PMS is characterized by a cyclic recurrence of symptoms of varying severity and is temporally related to menstruation, with exacerbation of symptoms during the luteal phase. Some new models are being developed to aid in studying PMS.
